The Best-Kept RV Secret on the Oregon Coast!
Six Reasons to Visit Sea Perch RV Resort in Yachats, Oregon
The continuous roar of the ocean is calmingly audible through the trailer walls, to lull me back to sleep. In the morning, the sea air is fresh with a touch of mist and my footsteps fall on water-drenched, but solid sand, that squishes just a bit as my boots fall on it. It’s just after low tide and rocks peek through the sand, beckoning an agate hunt. The sun is fighting its way through the billowy white clouds promising more to come.
Six and a half miles south of Yachats and 17 miles north of Florence, Oregon, on the oceanside of the road, lies, in my opinion, the finest RV park on the Oregon Coast—Sea Perch RV Resort. Why else would a Portland couple, who reside only two hours from the beach, travel 45 additional miles to Yachats, Oregon?
Why? The Six “F’s” explain:
Freedom for Dogs—
One reason we purchased a trailer was to travel with Annie and Molly, our two yellow Labs. We look for more than tiny dog runs enclosed by fences.
We look for proximity to dog parks, or easy access to the “pet areas”. At SeaPerch, you can park backed up to the spacious pet area, about the size of half a football field, for a leashed walk, or take the dogs to the beach where no leashes are required.
Few Footsteps to the Beach—
At the edge of the park, only 13 steps lead down to an uncrowded sandy beach, perfect for walking and agate hunting while watching the dogs chase balls in the surf.(Hint: Be sure to unleash the dogs at the top of the stairs, or they may drag you down with them in their haste to reach the bottom.)
Some RV spaces feature a back-up to the beach itself for that incomparable constant view of the Pacific Ocean breaking on the shore.
Fabulous Food—
Don’t want to cook the whole time? Yachats has some of the best seafood on the Oregon Coast. Ona, for a more upscale choice featuring fresh seafood and local favorites as well (which chef Michelle Korgan calls “locally sourced, globally inspired”), or Luna, for a more laid-back vibe, to sample unparalleled fish-n’chips (recently reported as the #1 fish n’ chips on the Oregon coast by the Oregonian newspaper), or to buy Luna’s fresh seafood to make your own creations.
First-class Facilities—
Some trailers, like ours, have small showers and the hot water can be intermittent. SeaPerch offers a premier clubhouse with a pool table, kitchen, a weight room with treadmill and cycle, and best of all, well-designed, lockable showers with rain-shower heads, set in a fully-tiled bathroom. This shower would be one you would be proud to have in your own home.
The toilets are enclosed within the bathroom for more privacy as well. The entire park is spotlessly clean with concrete slabs and is well maintained. Even the electrical hookup is cute, resembling a fire hydrant, rather than a pole stuck in the ground.
Friendly club staff and resident hosts—My goodness! They even help you back in. Extensions for cables are offered, and suggestions for sightseeing in the area, including tide schedules, are available. If you visit on a Saturday during the summer, you will be invited to a Happy Hour at the clubhouse, where burgers and hot dogs are served.
Fast access to trails and local attractions:
One such site is Heceta Head Lighthouse which opened in 1894 and features the brightest beacon on the coast. Also on the property is their BnB from a converted house.
A wide gravel .9-mile trail leads to the top, perfect for leashed dogs and people. Glimpses of the Pacific breaking explosively on the rocks, visible through the trees, enhance the uphill walk through the forest.
Cape Perpetua, part of the Siuslaw National Forest, is nearby as well, offering 12 hiking trails, some open to mountain bikes and some even with wheelchair access. The trails range from .2 miles to nine miles in length, featuring volcanic rocks, tidepools, and old-growth timber.
My confession: I am a bit of a “trailer snob”. I don’t have the biggest or most expensive trailer out there, but neither did I agree to suffer through unkempt RV accommodations where the grass is overgrown and the showers are not private.
But now, after sharing this secret with you, what are my chances of getting a reservation in the future?
